Original German Chocolate Cake Recipe
Ingredients
For the cake:
- 1 cup butter
- 4 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
- 2 cups white sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup buttermilk
For the frosting:
- 1 1/2 cups evaporated milk
- 1 cup white sugar
- 3 egg yolks
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 cups flaked coconut
- 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
Melt the butter and chocolate together in a double boiler or in the microwave, stirring frequently until smooth. In a medium bowl, combine the sugar, eggs, vanilla, and salt. Beat together until light and fluffy. Add the melted chocolate mixture and beat until smooth. In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking soda. Add the flour mixture and the buttermilk alternately to the chocolate mixture, beating until smooth.
Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
To make the frosting, combine the evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, butter, and vanilla in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and boils. Boil for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and stir in the coconut and walnuts. Spread the frosting over the cooled cake.
